Pastor Rob Byker starts off the Daring to Draw Near series with a message from Genesis 32:22–32 titled “Prepare to Wrestle.”
Throughout his life, Jacob longed for his father’s blessing—so much so that he once disguised himself as his brother to steal it. But in a mysterious nighttime wrestling match, Jacob comes face to face with the One who holds the ultimate blessing. Desperate and determined, he clings to his opponent and declares, “I will not let you go unless you bless me!”
In response, the stranger gives Jacob a new name: Israel, which means “one who struggles with God and overcomes.”Yet Jacob doesn’t leave the encounter unchanged—he’s wounded, left walking with a limp. He becomes a wounded conqueror, forever marked by his encounter with God.
As Christians—the New Israel—we are called to wrestle with God in prayer, to engage with Him fully and honestly. We cannot afford to hold back.
For the Kids
This week in Children’s Church (preschool–elementary), the children will learn how God sent the plagues to show His power and help His people. They’ll see that God is strong, He keeps His promises, and He cares for us even when things are hard.
